Grand Gulch

How many ruins, petroglyphs, pictographs and artifacts you find in Grand Gulch is but a function of how much you look around. Below are just two of many dwellings built by the Anasazi between A.D. 1060 and 1270 in this archaeologically rich area.

The wooden "railing" in the upper

part of this cliff dwelling led to its name,

the Banister Ruin. The smaller structure

at the bottom of the photo is a kiva.

The "double-decker" architecture of

this ruin (left side of photo) led to its

name, the Split Level Ruin.

A couple of red pictographs along

the trail. As interesting as these hands

may be, much larger, more elaborate

rock art is hidden in the side canyons

of Grand Gulch.
