Towel Creek
The Verde Hohokam (aka Southern Sinagua) built this cliff dwelling sometime between A.D. 1125 and 1300 along Towel Creek, a tributary of the Verde River.
Members of the Southern Arizona
Hiking Club take a breather in
front of the site's best-preserved
room. Note the little hole in
the upper left that served as
a prehistoric "chimney."
Behind this ancient wall is a large
room covered with piles of dried
guano (bat droppings) that crunch
under one's feet like black snow.
More than 900 bats, which inhabit
the ruin seasonally, have been
counted at this site.
